Google Adsense, good for small business web sites?

The introduction of  Google's adsense advertising program is a good thing for small business web sites. The reason is that adsense allows advertisers which are targeted to the specific content of the web site to place ads on the pages that the web site owner selects and the web site owner is paid a percentage of every click on the ad.

This model of advertising again highlights Google's emphasis upon content, for Google content is king. Google seeks web sites that have solid content that relates to search terms their customers are seeking information on.

For the small business web site owner Google's  adsense is a natural partner. An added benefit is that the sales part of the advertising is done for you. Instead of you trying to find and sell advertising on your web site Google does it and delivers the ads ready to go to your web pages via adsense.

An example of how it all works; you have a web site that is devoted to making wooden canoes by hand. Your web site covers all aspects of how to construct a wooden canoes by hand. Some advertisers that might want to place ads on your web site could be companies that sell woodworking tools, companies that sell marine paint and varnish, special hardware for canoes, canoe racks for cars, canoe transport dollies, canoe paddles, covers for canoes and so on. Each time an ad is clicked Google collects money from the advertisers and a portion of that money is then paid to you.

One very important point  however is you need to have verified traffic to you web site. A web site that is not generating a good traffic flow will not be attractive to potential advertisers .

If you decide to choose Google adsense before placing ads on your web site pages review what each of the pages is about and what is the desired reaction you want from your visitors. If you are asking your visitors to respond to your web site then don't send them off to Google advertisers. But if you have pages that don't really produce any high value return for your web site, then by all means place the ads on those pages and convert them into high value producers.

Although this article is about Google's adsense program there is another program for pay per click advertisers called Adwords. I mention this here because Google recently made two important moves into the regional marketing arena. They have combined their local search tool with local regional) Adwords ads.

What this means for small business is very important. It will allow small local businesses to place highly targeted ads at affordable prices. Small regional businesses will be able to bid on key words in local markets and have their ads displayed to a highly targeted audience. For more on Google's latest developments visit their home page and click on advertisers.
