Keywords and Links ,why your web site needs them

This article is written for people who may not know all the ins and outs of web site design and who may not be familiar with HTML or keyword tags which use keywords. To design a web site a programming language called HTML is used. This language allows the internet search engines and your own web browser to interpret the information and display it on your computer. Part of this language uses what are called tags. These tags serve a number of purposes among them, they indicate graphics, special text and the composition and arrangement of text on the web pages. Tags also are short hand ways of telling the search engines what the web site or page is about. This is where keywords come in.

Meta tags are the name of one set of HTML code tags. These tags have two parts, a brief summary of the web site and a number of keywords or phrases that would be used by someone searching for your web site. The keyword tag allows the author of the web site to emphasize various words and phrases that relate to the web site.
The description part of the tag allows the author to control the text of the summary displayed when the page appears in the results of a search.

Your web site needs to place the appropriate keywords or phrases in the right place so that a search engine can find them and then display your web site or web page. One of your first and most important jobs whether you are the actual web site designer or just the owner is to select keywords that people will use to search for  the product ,service or message that you are offering on your web site.

Keywords and phrases are only one part of the web site, the most important element of your site is the actual content. Within the content is where your keywords reside. The most effective placement of your keywords is at the beginning of your web site. People who are looking for what you offer don't want to have to scroll down or through several pages to find what they want. People searching on the web are impatient. They want to land on a page or web site that delivers what they are seeking right up front. Keep in mind the principal used in journalism, the most interesting information at the top of the story, the details follow as you read on.
Keeping the most important keywords in the text at the beginning of your web site will keep the search engines and people searching happy.

Links are another important part of your overall web site success. Search engines look for links coming into your web site as a sign of validation. But not just any links the links need to be coming from good quality web sites.  The search engines use links as an evaluation tool. Much like a referral from a friend. If other quality web sites are referring people to your web site then you must be offering good information about the subject of your web site.

A link campaign, is a concerted effort to find other quality web sites that complement yours and ask for a link. This can be time consuming and can require some research but it is s worth while task. The more quality links point toward your web site the better the search engines like you. Links can be an endorsement of value from other web information providers.

To get links you need to do some work. First you need to find good quality web sites that will complement the product, service or message that you are offering on your site. Then you need to really look through the site and find out what is particularly good about it. While you are evaluating the possible link partner you can use the Google tool bar. The tool bar integrates with your web browser and provides page rank for each site that you visit. Next step you need to contact the webmaster for the site and make your request. Be sure your web site is ready for inspection before you do this. You don't want your potential link provider to visit your web site and find under construction pages. Your web site should be up, running and fully functional.

When you contact the webmaster for the site you wish to link to be sure to list some things about the site that you like. Also be clear about why you are requesting a link and how you think a link to your site will benefit their web site. Make a point of listing the URL of the page where you would like to have a link appear. Date your request so you can follow up based upon time since you first made contact with the webmaster. After one month it is time to follow up with webmasters that have not responded to your request. Quality links pointing to your web site are one more element that search engines and directories like to see ,and they will also spread the word about your web site.                                                                                        HOME
